A day in the life of a Marketing Coordinator in

There is always something new to do or develop in marketing

How I looked for work

I'd worked in a publishing company as a marketing assistant for two years before deciding I'd like a change of direction. I signed up to as many job alerts as possible, and I found out about this role via Twitter. I would recommend browsing job adverts for anything that even vaguely interests you, to see if you are getting the skills that are required for the type of jobs you'll apply for.

My advice to students considering work

Keep an open mind - don't worry about settling on a particular industry. I am good at marketing so I've found myself working in different sectors that interest me, but using similar skills. Even in the 4 years since graduating my career path has changed - not necessarily for better or worse, but in unexpected directions that will no doubt continue to surprise me!

My advice about working in my industry

Higher education is a rewarding place to work - there tends to be a healthy work culture, decent pay and good benefits. There are so many roles within a university that you might go in doing one thing, and end up in a different office learning different skills. As for marketing, you need to prove that you have a wide range of skills. Get work experience in marketing if you can, but it doesn't need to be an agency - you could also do promotion-type activities for a student society (as I did), or volunteer in a communications-type role for any organisation.

What I do

I work as part of the marketing team within the office that promotes LSE to prospective university students. We do print and digital marketing, which covers many different things, as well as helping the wider team with recruiting students in the more traditional way - visiting schools and universities around the world.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Attention to detail; time management; creativity; stamina; confidence - I think these are skills you have naturally, but I have tried to cultivate them via work experience and office employment during university.

What I like most

Marketing is a very varied job, and there is always something new to try or develop. In some jobs you'll find yourself doing the same jobs each week, month or year, and get stuck in an annual cycle - but in marketing, there's always another project to get stuck into.
