A day in the life of a Partner in the United Kingdom
Partner of Let's Be Clear - coaching and therapy
My career goals when I graduated
Find a job to get some money but with no clue what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go.
My career history
After graduation, I landed a job in customer services working in an inbound contact centre for a networking company. In the 2 years while I worked there I began training as a coach and therapist and then started the business.
What has helped my career to progress
Spending time being lost, trying to make the most of opportunities I could afford to take and discovering what I loved to do then going for it.
Courses taken since graduation
Certified Practitioner and Master Practitioner in each of: NLP, Time Line Therapy and Hypnotherapy. All the courses gave me the qualifications to become a coach and therapist on which to build the business.
What surprised me about my career so far
I never would have thought when I was at York that I would be where I am now.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
To grow the business to provide more training sessions. Be a trainer of NLP and an instructor for MHFA. Be working from a bespoke space.
My advice to students considering work
Take opportunities that excite you. Follow your passions. Everything you do will teach you something new. There is no such thing as failure only feedback.
My advice about working in my industry
Going after what you want and being self-employed takes lots of hard work and motivation.
Other advice
Don't do something you don't want to because you think it is expected of you. How you get to where you are going is up to you.
What I do
As a business partner I design and manage the website and promotional materials. As a coach and therapist I work with individual clients and also run bespoke workshops for groups.
How I started my business
After training as a coach and therapist, I researched what was needed to start a business and the legal stuff. Opened a new business bank account, found office space, built the website and started the social media campaign. Advertising for getting clients through the door was the make or break part of being successful.
What inspired me
I was working in a job I didn't enjoy and wanted to do something I loved and having my own radio station was not an option so I decided being a therapist would be an even better choice.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy and Hypnotherapy are the specialist skills I use with clients and developed them through extra training after my degree. I use a range of computer skills to promote the business and those I didn't have on leaving university came mostly from trial and error. Other skills used include research, communication, teamwork, sales, negotiation...
What I like most
I love what I do because I choose what I get to do every day. I can work every day and not get tired or bored, or I can choose to give myself a day off in the middle of the week because I set my own schedule.
What I like least
Least favourite part is accounting.
What surprised me most
How easy it was to set up the business when I let go of my fears of failing and disappointing my family.
