A day in the life of a Chairman in the United Kingdom

I can offer a reality check to those of you thinking of a career in marketing, an assessment of your CV/covering letter and careers advice.

My career history

A variety of agencies and client companies.

What has helped my career to progress

Being in the right place at the right time and having the support and encouragement of some amazing people.

My advice to students considering work

Get anything, learn on the job and use the experience as a stepping stone to what you ultimately want. Career paths take twists and turns that you might not expect and you need to be flexible, adaptable and go with the flow.

My advice about working in my industry

Develop a thick skin, don't be afraid of asking, be persistent, persevere, be prepared to work very hard, sometimes with very anti-social hours, don't expect it to be easy - marketing isn't a soft option.

Other advice

Think hard, think again and triple check everything. You might only get one shot so make sure it hits the mark, i.e. make it super-perfect.

Contacting me

Happy to answer questions by email and review CVs and covering letters.

What I do

Founder, co-owner and Chairman of an advertising and marketing agency.

Skills I use and how I developed them

My role is very varied and includes client relationship management, brief writing, strategic thinking, creative response assessment, man management, financial analysis, corporate governance and being a general fire fighter. Most of my skills result from practical work experience although doubtlessly some analytical and writing skills were embedded through my degree course.

What I like most

The challenge of trying to improve.

What I like least

Mundane admin.

What surprised me most

How easy, and yet how difficult, it can be to make a profit!
