A day in the life of a MD/Shareholder in the United Kingdom
Good interpersonal skills are vital
My career goals when I graduated
Didn't really have a specific goal, wanted to be successful, have good work / life balance and to run my own business.
My career history
I started at the main banks (TSB & Lloyds) and then working for an investment bank (Rothschild) and then have set up my own companies.
How my studies have helped my career
Economics clearly helps in the financial world, but it is more about people and attitude.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Running my own business on a larger scale.
My advice to students considering work
Plan/prepare and research your potential employer. If you graduate from York, your employer will know you are pretty intelligent, so it's all about personality.
What I do
I am M.D and shareholder of Reparo Finance. Reparo lend to small and medium sized companies.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I use financial analysis skills, but mostly interpersonal skills. These are developed through learning and on the job experience
What I like most
Helping companies expand and prosper, and developing long term relationships with the people involved.
What I like least
Inflexible people / companies, too much paperwork and regulation.
