Continuing learning to develop a career as a professional Psychologist
Why I continued studying
I was inspired from my Psychology degree learning to think about what I really wanted to do to contribute to the society, and so I was led to the idea that I wanted to provide direct psychological support to the individuals. Therefore I applied for counselling course and decided to develop my journey to becoming a counselling psychologist.
What my course is like
It's a academic-experiential training route to become a counsellor.
How I have funded my studies
I have self funded my studies
What I like most
I enjoyed the experiential groups/learning which helped me jump outside the academic bubble - that's a crucial point for being a counsellor/counselling provider!
What I like least
The course was not intense - it's 2 days a week course and I expected more!
What surprised me most
Experiential learning! I was inspired to be creative, intuitive and emotional - that helped a lot in my client work.
My career goals when I graduated
I decided to get work experience (at least 3 years) so that I can be equipped with sufficient skills - I wanted a position as a counsellor/related job role.
Furthermore, as a Chinese national, I needed the hands-on experience to know what it is like getting the western based knowledge and applying in a localized Chinese context, hence my decision to work in Hong Kong, China.
However my ultimate goal that time was to return to training to become a counselling psychologist.
My career history
I worked in a non-governmental organization to get myself immersed in the local work culture.
I then progressed to work as a student development officer/counselor in a local college to provide student support (counseling, groupwork, career support, personal development).
What has helped my career to progress
Determination! Devotion is the key - I decided to give myself 100% so I could learn the most. Time was not an issue - passion led me to get as much experience and learning as possible.
Courses taken since graduation
I am currently back to training in Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, University of Manchester.
How my studies have helped my career
This is the final route before I become a Chartered Psychologist. Academically and clinically I am gaining competence.
What surprised me about my career so far
The enjoyment of learning and opportunities I have gained along the way - it's the beauty of being passionate.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
To become a counselling psychologist and also an active blogger/speaker/traveler to promote psychological well-being.
My advice to students considering further study
Dream big. Think twice. Decide carefully.
Spend time to really think what you want in your life. Then experiment and research about it. Take action. You will find your way and realize the journey is the best gift to yourself.
Other advice
Be passionate!
