A day in the life of a International Tax Senior Manager in the United Kingdom

Tax manager at international professional services firm.

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

The process involved an online application; online aptitude tests; first round interview (manager); then an assessment centre (including partner/director interview).

My career history

A small amount of self-employment was my only prior experience - I didn't undertake any internships. I have progressed from the graduate scheme to the position of senior manager.

Courses taken since graduation

ACA (Chartered Accountant) - ICAEW (Instutute of Chartered Accounts in England & Wales).

My advice to students considering work

When prospective employers are interviewing you, just relax and "be yourself". It's not just a cliché - they're more interested in the person they're potentially going to be working with than how many facts you can recite. Your application and aptitude tests will already have shown them what they need to know in terms of technical ability.

You don't have to have an academic background in accounting or economics to go into the industry, and not doing so does not put you at any disadvantage. Assumed knowledge for the job and professional qualifications is generally nil. But do try to show that you've looked into the industry and know why you want a career in it.

Contacting me

I'm happy to be contacted by anyone considering working for PwC, working in tax, or the accounting/finance industry more generally.

What I do

I provide tax advice to corporate clients on a range of complex tax matters, with a specialism in international tax.

Skills I use and how I developed them

My work involves a combination of law, accountancy and consultancy. These skills are acquired through a combination of training, professional qualifications and on-the-job learning as part of the graduate program.
