A day in the life of a CEO in the United Kingdom

CEO and Business Owner reflects on his time studying at York

How I looked for work

When I left York I worked abroad for a while playing and coaching football, then I did some travelling before enrolling onto KPMG's graduate scheme.

How I found out about the job

Careers website (University of York)

The recruitment process

The recruitment process for the graduate scheme involved two interviews, a presentation, some verbal and numerical tests, and a group exercise.

My career goals when I graduated

I wanted to progress in business, eventually getting to the stage where I owned my own company.

My career history

I spent 3 years on KPMG's graduate scheme, qualifying as an ACA in 2007. I then moved into Corporate Finance at Baker Tilly International. In 2011 I made the bold move from practice into industry, joining a start-up in the gaming sector. I was promoted to director and then spent 5 years as CFO of this company, helping to grow it into a 250+ person organisation. In 2016 I left to take a FD role at Newcastle Racecourse to help with the implementation of the first ever All-Weather racetrack in the north of England. I then set-up Fortuna Gaming.

What has helped my career to progress

Hard work, being driven, taking advice form sensible people, and learning from my mistakes.

Courses taken since graduation

ACA

How my studies have helped my career

They gave me the qualifications and broad base upon which to build on.

What surprised me about my career so far

I have been surprised by how some organisations are so reluctant to adapt, evolve, and move with the times.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Hopefully by then the business will be in a position whereby I can take a bit more of a back seat and let others run the company, freeing me up to either start something new, or finally spend a bit more time with my family!

My advice to students considering work

Get the qualifications you need and then try to get work in a smaller organisation, where if you do a good job you will make an impact and get noticed quickly.

My advice about working in my industry

Beware of entering into long term contracts with fixed monthly costs.

Other advice

Beware of those who make false promises.

What I do

I am the CEO of https://www.wizardslots.com/ a fun online gaming website that was launched earlier this year. Our site brings you over 300 online slot games from the very best gaming developers on the market. There are also all the main table games plus some bingo, keno, scratchcard, and other exciting online games to enjoy.

Skills I use and how I developed them

During my Maths degree at York I obviously developed my numerical skills and this has undoubtedly helped me during my business career to date. However, the key skills that I learnt during my time at York, and I realise this sounds horrifically cheesy, were general life and social skills. This has helped me build highly efficient, yet fun, working teams during my career so far.

What I like most

I like taking an idea and then working with a small group of great people to make that idea into a profitable, scalable business.

What I like least

I dislike working in large corporate organisations where it's almost impossible to get things done in a fast enough timeframe.

What surprised me most

What has surprised me most during my career so far is the vast array of different people that you come across. I have worked with people far cleverer than me who have failed to understand simple business concepts and hence their careers have stagnated.
