A day in the life of a Executive Director, Global Market Access in Germany

I love the challenges of my work: market access is the hottest and perhaps most challenging topic in pharma today.

How I looked for work

I was contacted by a headhunter for my first job in Boehringer.

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

My career history

I started off in pharmaceutical industry in a very typical way, as a sales representative, then I moved to Marketing. I moved into health economics, pricing and market access when that field of work was only starting, in the early 2000's.

Courses taken since graduation

Lots. In this field of work, constant further training is absolutely essential, both for technical topics and for people-management skills.

My advice to students considering work

Strong motivation and academic curiosity are absolutely essential. If you enjoy what you are doing, you will do it well and people will notice. Apply yourself and go the extra mile.

My advice about working in my industry

Entry-level positions in health economics are readily available, and it is an exciting field. Find a company you like and get started as a health economist. Coming straight from University, there will be lots of things that you still need to learn - but the training at York will have given you an excellent basis.

Other advice

Enjoy the great teaching whilst you're in York - it is a fabulous place to study!

What I do

My team is responsible for developing the market access strategy for new products in Immunology and Neuroscience. This encompasses the understanding of evidence requirements for health technology assessment and subsequent evidence development and synthesis for each product. We develop pricing strategies, real-world evidence, economic models, clinical outcome assessments, and a lot more.

Skills I use and how I developed them

One aspect of my job is people management and communication to my team and the company's senior management. The other aspect is the technical content of the work, which encompasses knowing about health technology assessment, patient-reported outcomes, real-world evidence generation, cost effectiveness modeling, evidence synthesis methods, and many more.
I hold a PhD in molecular biology, which helps me understand the scientific basis for my work. During my studies at York, I learned about many aspects of health economics and health technology assessment, which is a key part of my work. Finally, I acquired a lot of my skills and knowledge "on the job", during the 12 years I have been succesfully working in this field.
