Why I continued studying
A Philosophy degree was great, but I felt I needed to gain some hard skills in order to really reach my full potential in my professional career.
What my course is like
I divide my time between the School of Language, Linguistics and Communication and the Business School. The Cross-Cultural component involves a lot of breaking down of what culture and communication is - it's where my Philosophy background comes in really useful.
The International Management component is almost all new to me, and it involves a lot more hard figures and Maths - it's great to contrast the two sides of my degree to get both soft and hard skills out of it.
How I have funded my studies
I took out a Government loan for £10,000. As I'm doing my course part-time, the loan is spread out over two years. I also do freelance tutoring to finance my studies.
What I like most
It's a really international degree, so you have people from all over the world convening to study together. Everyone brings a different set of experiences, so it provides really stimulating conversations.
What surprised me most
It's not as difficult as you think it will be. Yes, it's a lot of work, but if you're prepared to put the effort in, it can be really stimulating to go even deeper into a field than you would've been able to in Undergraduate studies, and you're surrounded by really clever people who've had lots of exciting life experience to add to the course.
My advice to students considering further study
Consider taking some time off. I took a year out to live and work in France. It allowed me to rest a little bit after my Undergraduate degree, as well as come with new perspectives on my studies. If you work for a bit, now only will you be able to bring practical experiences, but also be able to part-fund your degree if you save up a little!
