A day in the life of a Brand Partnerships Coordinator in the United Kingdom

Be bold and think outside the box: I got my job through a guest lecture at the Management school. I spoke to the guests at the end, went home and submitted my CV and a covering letter straight away. The next month I received a job offer.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

London North Eastern Railway is a Train Operating Company (TOC), running passenger services up and down the East Coat Route, from London King's Cross all the way up to Inverness and Aberdeen.

What do you do?

As Brand Partnerships Coordinator I set up and manage brand relationships on the East Coast Route. This includes partnerships with Destination Marketing Organisations (DMO's) such as Visit York and Scotland, National Partnerships with household names and Sports Partnerships with local clubs. The aim of my role is to further establish brand love of LNER!

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Since graduating in January 2020, I have had four roles:

- Graduate Qualitative Researcher at Blue Yonder Research
- Graduate Ambassador and Content Creator at the University of York
- Digital Marketer at Castle Howard
- Brand Partnerships Coordinator at LNER

My degree has opened so many doors, allowing me to experience different areas of Marketing early on. At LNER, I now plan to build a long term career, drawing upon knowledge from my BA in Business, MSc in Global Marketing and experiences within the workplace.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I studied a MSc in Marketing so it’s exactly what I hoped for. However, I work with colleagues who have degrees in business, psychology, marketing and finance! If you don't have a Marketing Degree, I'd highly recommend studying the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) professional qualifications. LNER are sponsoring me to complete the final levels of mine.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Seeing a national campaign which I had project managed with a brand partner go live. Amazing feeling, seeing the project from start to finish and launching my first national marketing piece!

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Very fast paced and every day is different. You need to be able to flexible and adaptive!

What’s your work environment and culture like?

LNER really is like a family! Many companies say that but at LNER, it truly feels this way. Senior management really care about you and your development.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I worked full time at a department store alongside achieving First Class degrees. I had to be organised, manage my time and put in the extra hours where necessary and this really prepared me for the workplace.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Promotion

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be bold and think outside the box: I got my Graduate role through a guest lecture at the Management school. I spoke to the speakers at the end, went home and submitted my CV and a covering letter straight away. The next month I received a job offer. (Also make sure you keep your CV up to date, check it every month)

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Happy to answer any questions - study, work or personal life related. I had a year of absence before I went to achieve my First Class degree
