A day in the life of a Head of Capability in the United Kingdom
HR Professional in the Civil Service
My career goals when I graduated
I wasn't sure - I wanted to work in central London for a big company but hadn't found my career path
My career history
I graduated in July 2012 and started working for an online company, Groupon, in August 2012 as an online researcher. I then applied for the fast stream in September 2013 and started my role in DCMS in September 2014. I completed the scheme in 2017, as well as gaining my MSc in Human Resource Management.
What has helped my career to progress
Focus on developing myself (both through formal learning and informally through experiences). Taking a few chances and taking the roles I was nervous about - they have been the most rewarding!
Courses taken since graduation
Completed MSc in Human Resourcing Management.
Assoc CIPD
What surprised me about my career so far
How varied it has been - I never would have thought I would be in this position when I graduated!
My advice to students considering work
Be flexible in your approach to work and have reasonable expectations- not everyone finds their dream job or career straight after graduation and that's fine!
Don't lose sight of the importance of the skills you learn at University - all the essays have been invaluable in my work.
Finally, never say never! I was determined when I left York my studying days were over but 3 years later I enrolled in a Masters and it was a fantastic opportunity.
My advice about working in my industry
Be flexible and be clear about why you want to work in government - you will get fantastic development and opportunities you would rarely get elsewhere but you do get what you give.
What I do
After successfully completing the HR Fast Stream, I am now a full time HR professional in the Civil Service. I have previously worked in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Ministry of Justice. Prior to the Civil Service I worked for 2 years in the private sector.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Drafting/writing
Stakeholder management
What I like most
Working collaboratively across government on various HR issues
What surprised me most
How varied the work in the Civil Service is, and that although my degree wasn't directly related to HR, the skills I gained at York have been very important.
