A day in the life of a Internship in Switzerland
My advice to students considering work
When looking for an internship I highly recommend contacting the respective group leaders directly via email and going in for an interview or then via skype. The emails should be short and to the point as they are always very busy and just want to know where you're from, your academic background and what you envision doing during your internship.
What I do
I was an intern at the University of Zurich for the summer of 2017 for a period of eight weeks. I was working in the Bohacek lab whose focus is neuroepigenetic research where I was under the supervision of a PhD student in a small group.
Skills I use and how I developed them
This internship allowed me to use my knowledge on PCR and qPCR, western blots and enhance my laboratory skills where I learned to conduct immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. It further enabled me to see how everyday laboratory work can be and gave me a valuable insight in to a PhD in the field of neuroscience/neuroepigentics. Given the responsibility to conduct the experiments, I greatly enhanced my time management, project management skills, as well as enhancing my attention to detail and dexterity that was required when doing specific tasks like loading samples into gels. I realised there that I want to pursue a PhD and gain more experiences working in a laboratory, the work was very enjoyable and I learned a lot.
What I like most
The valuable insight I gained into the workday of a PhD student and how to work with such an international team. The possibility to set my own daily goals and work independently.
What surprised me most
I was surprised how well I could integrate with the knowledge and skills gained at York and how much responsibility I was given as a bachelor student still doing her education. I got along extremely well with the whole team and the work done during my internship was taken into account for their paper.
