A day in the life of a Maths Teacher in the United Kingdom

Current maths teacher with TEFL background

How I looked for work

During the PGCE year trainee teachers start to look for work. The biggest advertiser of teaching jobs is the TES (Times Educational Supplement) website, but don't forget to look on council websites, and there are also many teaching recruitment agencies.

How I found out about the job

A teacher is a well known job.

The recruitment process

I applied to train to become a teacher through the Teach First Leadership Development graduate programme, SCITT (directly school based) and also PGCE courses based at universities.

These normally involve a written application form, a mini teaching task and a face to face interview.

My career goals when I graduated

Become a teacher of mathematics.

My career history

Support teaching role in an international school in Beijing China (1 year)
PGCE teacher training (1 year)
Teaching role in North Manchester comprehensive 11-16 (2 years)
Teaching role in East Manchester comprehensive 11-18 (2 years)
Teaching role in Oldham, Greater Manchester 16-18 (current, 1+ years)

What has helped my career to progress

Hard work, dedication, good relationships with staff (across school as well as line managers), interest in own professional development.

Courses taken since graduation

Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Mathematics 11-18
MSc STEM Education

How my studies have helped my career

A mathematics degree is not a formal requirement in order to become a maths teacher but the fact I have studied mathematics to a high level does allow me a certain confidence in my subject knowledge, which is definitely a must.
The PGCE is the most commonly accepted and recognised teaching qualification although others are available.

What surprised me about my career so far

Availability of maths teaching jobs abroad and in UK.
How opportunities just sometimes arise by being in the right place at the right time.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

At the moment I'd like to be the best maths teacher I can be

My advice to students considering work

Get a variety of experiences during the student days. A variety of part time / short term jobs is the best way to practice the soft skills of team work, communication, building relationships, and the diligence required for full time work. In term time and holidays I cleaned toilets, washed pots, delivered packages, handed out flyers, organised recruitment events, and led workshops for young people. Doing this helped me know what I do and don't enjoy.

My advice about working in my industry

Get the best degree you can; there are currently better financial rewards for higher degree classes. Get real experience in schools; it's becoming more of a formal requirement than just a good idea. Research and apply for the different teacher training routes; you'll maximise your chances of success and finding the right thing.
