A day in the life of a Merchandise Planner in the United Kingdom
My advice to students considering work
Think carefully about what you want to do. Make sure you research the companies you're applying for carefully and apply for lots of jobs - it's always better to have more choice than less.
What I do
I manage the stock levels, forecasting, intake and distribution of small screen TVs at Dixons Group. Each Planner looks after a different product area and works within a team of people to help trade those products profitably but within the constraints of the stock budget.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
Presentation skills for interviews/assessment centres and meetings.
Extracurricular skills:
Working at URY - confidence, teamwork, IT skills.
What I like most
Although there is work that has to be done weekly/daily, there will always be different challenges every day and very few days are the same.
What I like least
When things are going wrong, there is a lot of pressure to get things fixed which can be stressful.
What would I change? I joined DSG on a graduate scheme which got cut short after 6 months. I think I would have benefited from experience of other areas of the business within the rotations of the graduate scheme.
