A day in the life of a Assistant Economist, Civil Service Fast Stream in the United Kingdom
Economist on the Civil Service Fast Stream graduate programme, currently working at the Department for Transport.
Courses taken since graduation
MSc Economics at the University of Warwick
My advice to students considering work
Start your planning early! Think about what your strengths are, the types of work you enjoy, and the areas that interest you. It is also worth applying for internships / graduate roles in the Autumn term, so that you can focus on these before your workload builds up later in the year.
What I do
I am an Assistant Economist on the Civil Service Fast Stream graduate programme. My current post is in the Aviation Capacity Economics team at the Department for Transport.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Written communication skills are important in this work. This is to explain technical concepts transparently and in a way that is understandable for the wider public. The Civil Service provide training opportunities to enable graduates to do this.
I have also improved my econometric skills by conducting an econometric piece of research. This is due to be published by the Department for Transport, and has built upon the knowledge I acquired through my time at York.
What I like most
The work is interesting and varied, and has a real impact on people.
