A day in the life of a Freelance Theatre Director in the United Kingdom
My advice to students considering work
Think about how you will earn money before you are able to earn money in a creative career, if you want to be an artist you will need to find other work that is flexible around your art for the first few years. It took me 5 years to be working full time in the arts.
What I do
I'm a freelance theatre director and practitioner. I work for theatres in London and across the UK including Orange Tree Theatre, Old Vic, Storyhouse and my own theatre company Yet Another Carnival. My work includes directing and making new theatre and performance, creating commissions for local authorities and organisations, fundraising, delivering and designing workshops and creative experiences in communities, schools, city centres. I work in the subsidised sector.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Leadership, facilitation skills, creative skills, text analysis, writing funding applications. My time at York helped me to write clearly and simply but most of my skills have been developed since graduating from training with various theatres, and seeking advice from peers who are also in the industry.
