A day in the life of a Internal Audit Manager in the United Kingdom
Internal Audit Manager
My career goals when I graduated
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I graduated but I knew I wanted to do something that challenged me.
My career history
I have been working in internal audit since 2012 across a range of organisations spanning the public, charity and financial services sectors.
Courses taken since graduation
I am a Chartered Internal Auditor with the Institute of Internal Auditors and am studying for my ACCA accountancy qualification.
My advice to students considering work
Look for opportunities where the employer shows a genuine interest in your training and development.
Contacting me
My career has spanned a range of sectors and I have touched on lots of areas through audit work so I am happy to answer lots of questions or consider mentoring requests.
What I do
I currently work as an Internal Audit Manager at Fidelity International. I lead audits of a range of financial services including asset management and pensions.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I have undertaken professional training during the role that has taught me a range of skills including risk and audit management. In addition I have been able to develop my communication skills as I have the chance to talk to a wide range of people about lots of different areas.
What I like most
No two days are the same, there are always opportunities to learn something about a new area and to continue to develop both professionally and personally.
What I like least
Audit has been seen negatively by some in the past so I am always working to show people how we can work collaboratively to bring about positive change.
What surprised me most
I was surprised by how much access I had to senior managers in organisations. I was a bit nervous the first time I was sitting across a table from a director!
