A day in the life of a Director, Project Finance Asset Management in the United Kingdom
I have had a varied international career in finance and I am involved in management and mentoring. I am looking to mentor an individual from any academic background who is looking for direction and advice.
My career goals when I graduated
I wanted to be a well-founded finanicer with international travel.
My career history
I started as a graduate in RBS' restructuring team focusing on highly leveraged transactions. I then moved to Project finance in London and Dubai with RBS and then my division was sold to MUFG Bank - the largest bank in Japan and the leading project finance bank in the world.
Courses taken since graduation
MSc in Finance & Economics at the LSE (London School.of Economics), CFA Levels 1 and 2.
How my studies have helped my career
My Economics degree at York taught me all-round analytical skills and report-writing. Also York has a good reputation so that helped with jobs
What surprised me about my career so far
How varied it has been and before I knew it, I have done 15+ years in banking.
My advice to students considering work
Do your research and try and get any work experience as it might help you decide what you like and just as importantly what you don't like!
My advice about working in my industry
Be prepared to graft and work hard. The expectations are to work hard and play hard.
What I do
I am a Director in the world's leading Project Finance investment bank lending to Energy and Natural Resources projects across Europe, Middle East and Africa. I am actively involved in recruitment, people management and CSR activities.
Skills I use and how I developed them
The skills I use are varied - includes people management, analysis and report writing.
What I like most
Working in a global environment working with people who are passionate and industrious and where every day is different.
What I like least
The long hours and constant pressure. That everything is often a priority.
What surprised me most
How quickly responsibility is give to you. I personally look after a portfolio of £3bn.
