A day in the life of a Creative Director in the United Kingdom

I started off in marketing and realised I only cared about the creative bit of the job!

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Studio Gomori is a creative micro-agency that works on branding, campaigns and content.

What do you do?

I am the founder and creative director.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

At York I enjoyed the intellectual rigour of my subjects and in my spare time was always drawn to creativity. I started off in marketing and realised I only cared about the creative bit of the job!

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes

Describe your most memorable day at work

Going to Wembley Stadium to pitch ideas to advertise the FA Cup (and winning!)

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Yes, it can be stressful, high-intensity and volatile, but nothing compared to really tough jobs like NHS or being a carer.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Whatever I choose! Open, honest, compassionate and experimental.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

JCR Rep - coming up with creative ways to keep people entertained
Rounders Team Captain - leadership and inspiration
Various different performances - confidence with public speaking
General goofing around - creativity and love of making people laugh

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'd love to hire a few people. I'm also writing novels and screenplays, and I'd love to spend half my time on this kind of creativity.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Transferrable skills are much more important now - a quick mind, clarity of thought, good communication, teamwork and agility/flexibility, problem solving and critical thinking. But the thing no one teaches you is that self-starting, being proactive, hard work and cultivating relationships are as important as anything.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything: general career/work questions, creativity, advertising and marketing, the arts, working in an agency, freelancing, the world of work in 2020, personal development.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

YORK
