A day in the life of a Statistician in the United Kingdom
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work in the data analysis directorate of HMRC
What do you do?
I am a Child Benefit statistician. Previous responsibilities including producing the 5-year expenditure forecast for the Chancellor's budget, monitoring monthly expenditure, and providing caseload analysis to assist with policy decisions. In my current role, I am responsible for producing the annual Child Benefit national statistics publication. Technical skills include coding in SAS and R, and Excel modelling.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
In December of my final year, I applied for a role as a statistician for the Government Statistical Service (GSS) through the Civil Service job site and was successful in my application and interview. From there, I was assigned to a permanent role at HMRC straight from graduation.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No, I knew throughout my degree that I wanted a role relevant to data analysis
Describe your most memorable day at work
I was tasked with matching two large datasets (one with ~2m data points, one with ~12m). They weren't coded the same so it wasn't a straightforward match. I was fairly new to coding but spent weeks writing a SAS code to create the best potential matched dataset between these two sources. When I got the end and had successfully matched the cases, I felt immense pride in my abilities.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was a student ambassador within the Psychology department and Goodricke college throughout my years at York. I was also a STYM and a member of the Goodricke STYM committee for 2 years. These gave me great people skills and showed me how to run something behind the scenes. Especially being part of the committee, I learned a lot about planning events which led me to new organisation skills and techniques which I apply in my everyday life as well as my job.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I would like to remain in the Civil Service and progress upwards as a data analyst.
