A day in the life of a Trainee Clinical Psychologist in the United Kingdom
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
NHS Humber Teaching Foundation Trust
What do you do?
I am completing the fast track Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hull.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I always wanted to become a Clinical Psychologist, particularly because I love to talk to people and reflect on their life experiences. I went to York and gained a first-class BSc in Psychology which furthered me to continue to the Doctorate.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No
Describe your most memorable day at work
So far, it was the first day as I didn't really know anyone and it was a new setting but everyone was kind and welcoming.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
At uni, I took on multiple volunteering roles and joined associations such as SHOUT and Nightline.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be yourself! That is what makes you stand out from the rest, so make sure you portray that in interviews. Also, really reflect on your own life experiences and how they have led you to your career of choice. What do you want to gain from training? Why Clinical Psychology and not other roles?
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
I am happy to help anyone who needs help :)
