A day in the life of a Investment Banking Analyst in the United Kingdom
Don't think that you're not good enough to apply for something or that a certain role is for "other people". Just apply - and apply early!
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Large multinational Bulge Bracket American Investment Bank.
What do you do?
Investment Banking Analyst within EMEA Loans and Leveraged Finance.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I undertook internships both in my penultimate year and final year which I subsequently converted into a full-time job offer.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Nope! I was pretty determined to make it in finance, and I worked hard to give myself every opportunity to succeed.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Let's see! Best is yet to come.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Steep learning curve, especially since I took no finance modules in my degree - but nothing that can't be learned on the job.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Citi's work culture is second-to-none. They foster an environment where you can really develop your skills in a teamwork-orientated way.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was the co-President of the Economics Society at York which taught me valuable skills such as time management and presentation skills, as we were often leading pitches to big corporates to secure them as sponsors, which we were often very successful in doing. I also took part in a YCC consulting project which was a great value-add to my CV as it gave me something tangible to talk about in my interviews.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
The job market is tough and you shouldn't leave things to the last minute, but equally don't think that you're not good enough to apply for something or that a certain role is for "other people". Just apply - and apply early!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Feel free to reach out for tips + advice on anything you'd like to talk about.
