A day in the life of a Admissions Officer in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for a Russell Group institution.
What do you do?
As an Admissions Officer I enjoy reviewing applications and offering places to promising students. I enjoy liaising with prospective applicants and their families at Open Days and smaller visits to explain all the wonderful opportunities that are available to them when they undertake an undergraduate degree!
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Working within Higher Education offers the opportunity to be able to apply the knowledge and skills I developed within my degree to a practical setting. I have a passion for educational equality so being able to work towards this within an educational setting is really rewarding.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I initially wanted to be a teacher but soon discovered this wasn't for me! As I'm really interested in education I wanted to stay within this field. I'd enjoyed modules focussing on higher education within my degree so I explored job opportunities available at universities... I'm very glad I did!
Describe your most memorable day at work
A Level results day is always very memorable! It's great to look forward to welcoming another year group of bright and brilliant students to the University after seeing all their hard work paying off in their A Level results.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Working within Higher Education is great and offers lots of opportunities for development - both professional and personal! Universities have a great culture for work/life balance which is important to me.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I volunteered for a charity and for a school whilst at the University of York.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Try get as much voluntary experience as possible! This will look fab on your applications but will also give you an insight into what kind of things you like (and don't like!) Don't be afraid to try different things until you find the job that suits you best.
