A day in the life of a Lead User Experience Researcher at BT in the United Kingdom
As a Lead UX Researcher at BT Enterprise, I am responsible for building and leading a team of UX Researchers.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
BT is one of the world's leading communications services companies. We serve the needs of customers in the UK and in 180 countries worldwide. Our main activities are the provision of fixed-line services, broadband, mobile and TV products and services as well as networked IT services.
What do you do?
As a Lead UX Researcher at BT Enterprise, I am responsible for building and leading a team of UX Researchers. The team is responsible for conducting advanced research, analysing and synthesising data in order to build consensus and challenge or validate assumptions. We turn research data into clear, engaging and actionable findings in order to help shape decisions across Digital.
The focus is primarily on usability testing with accessibility principles in mind. I am responsible for defining processes and developing UXResearch maturity across the Enterprise sector of the organisation. I am responsible for building the in-house research capabilities allowing scalability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In addition, I developed a research roadmap for digital experience driven by strategic priorities and tactical demand.

Describe your most memorable day at work
When the geese have little ones it’s really cool! (Twice as aggressive though!). The city of York is just a Harry Potter scene and the food at the Trembling Madness pub is epic! Great memories from the library study breaks! The sense of community across campus, especially in my college Halifax (has a special place in my heart).
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Studying as much as possible was my no1 goal.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
- Apply to graduate schemes as early as possible.
- Keep your Linkedin up to date. When asked to provide a CV, you can download your LinkedIn profile. The downloadable version is decent and will save you loads of time from creating one from scratch.
