A day in the life of a EAL/English Teacher in Germany
I volunteered for the York Students in Schools (YSIS) initiative in the 2nd year of my BA. This experience helped me realise that teaching and supporting young people was for me.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for a British International School teaching English and EAL to a wide variety of students from multiple countries.
What do you do?
I teach across the UK key Stages; KS3 English, IGCSE English Language and Linguistics and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Language Acqusition English B course.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I wanted to gain international experience and to teach a variety of syllabi to both native and non native English speakers. Knowledge and experience gained from my MA in TESOL has been invaluable.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I always knew I wanted to teach and educate young people!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Teaching curricula designed for natives to non-natives...
Not having my own classroom!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work and teach across multiple classrooms and the library...it's very busy, often chaotic, and space is tight! Being highly organised and efficient is crucial in this role as I have to carry any books.resources with me from classroom to classroom. I use a lot of technology in my lessons to lessen the amount of paper needed! I always dress smartly - setting a good example for my students. I usually work from 8-4.30; I like to keep work and home separate.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

What would you like to do next with your career?
I would like to either gain further teaching experience through Adult ESOL teaching or perhaps working in a welfare and support capacity with young people, in a school or community setting.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Develop as many skills as you can! The more skills and experience you gain the wider variety of jobs will be open to you upon graduation. Engage with as many extra curricular activities as you can - I wish I had done more of this!
