A day in the life of a Risk Management Officer in Lebanon

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Saradar Bank Sal is one of the top banks in Lebanon.
What do you do?
I consult on financial risk management topics: Following is a list of my tasks
• Work on projects like the recovery plan, ICAAP, risk appetite, IFRS9 ECL, IFRS7 disclosures, Capital Plan, Capital adequacy Ratio (CAR), Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR), Liquidity forecasting;
• Run scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo Simulations using multiple statistical techniques to evaluate the potential risks and to mitigate against bad scenarios using hedging strategies when applicable.
• Build models in order to estimate the capital required to comply with the regulators’ requirements, the bank’s appetite, the recovery plan, the downgrade scenario, etc …
• Prepare periodic reports and presentations for ALCO, the risk and credit committees, external auditors and consultants, etc…
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
My passion for Finance and my educational background led me to apply for risk management positions.

No
Describe your most memorable day at work
Every day is memorable. With the continuous uncertainty in the market and the new regulations set by regulators, my work includes always the surprise factor. I always tweak models or even sometimes change a model altogether to reflect the new changes in the market. Nothing is permanent and stable, which I like.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
There are many challenges in my field. To list some: -(1)strict deadlines, -(2)managerial decisions that require my models to be well developed , my assumptions to be realistic and the outcomes to be as accurate as possible. -(3)overtime and all-nighters are possible on a daily basis.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
It is a very professional environment. Most of my coworkers have international experience with the best banks and consultancies
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Basketball.

What would you like to do next with your career?
I am looking to relocate and seeking a job outside my country. It won't be very easy because I need sponsorship from employers.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
It is very competing. You should always strive to learn more to be able to compete. I also advise you to go into a field that you like and enjoy because your job will become a big part of your life and if you are not happy with your profession, it will reflect badly on other parts of your life
