United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
What do you do?
I promote investments and technology transfer from Germany / Europe to developing countries and emerging markets. UNIDO is the UN Special Organisation that is supporting inclusive and sustainble industrial development worldwird. We have 50 offices and departments covering the following sectors: Environment, Energy, Agribusiness, Trade-Investment-Innovation (TII). I am based at the UN Campus in Bonn / Germany and work for the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) Germany
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
It's been a long way: I worked for economic institutes, in various projects by EU / Germany Government in Eastern Europe, I was managing director of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK) on the Balkans, worked for a Chinese real estate developer and have my own company (business consultancy).
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I cannot recall. I started off working in Russia in the 90ies because it interested to be there and everything developed from there.

My working days are always full of highlights
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Yes, bureaucracy and political infighting
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Very international, dynamic and creative
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I studied some Russian, that I later applied when travelling in the former Soviet Union and studying for a year in Russia, straight after York. I was also rowing at UYBC, teaching me to be a team player and persistant.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Set up my own company
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Keep flexbile, interested and learning. York University is a great foundation

Work at the UN, setting up your own business, working as consultant and international jobs more general and Germany in particular
