A day in the life of a Shopping Account Manager in Ireland
I work with a range of clients, from SMBs to multi-national retailers, helping with their Google Shopping strategy.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work in the advertising section of Google. I'm based in Dublin at the EMEA headquarters.
What do you do?
I work with a range of clients, from SMBs to multi-national retailers, helping with their Google Shopping strategy, as well as occasional troubleshooting and more technical support!
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
The key thing which drew me to this role is being able to support smaller businesses in achieving their goals. It's a great role which allows me to learn about many different verticals (and as you can see from my degree I've always liked learning about a range of topics!), as well as having direct impact on a daily basis.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
It is very different! After graduation I worked in fundraising for educational institutions (such as schools and universities), then returned to university to do a masters in Philosophy before applying to many different types of jobs. I didn't see myself in advertising, but am glad I took the leap.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Black Friday - as all of my clients are online retailers this is the biggest day (and week) of the year for the majority of them. Last year it fell very close to Christmas and a lot of retailers were feeling the pressure. The day was manic for everyone on my team but really allowed us to work together and help each other out. It was very fun, fielding many emails and calls, working with different markets to usual and seeing campaigns succeed in a short period of time.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Scandinavian (Nordic) Society - as President it taught me how to organise events and delegate. The latter is an essential skill which took me a while to realise how important it is.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Don't focus on one industry; think about what skills you have and want to develop and consider where else these could be applicable. Expanding my job search after graduation lead me to opportunities I hadn't considered before because I had no awareness of these roles or industries, so ask around and speak to as many people as possible.
