A day in the life of a Senior Key Expert - R&D in India
Being at York is definitely great as educational pedigree still matters to a certain extent. But increasingly, developing competency and demonstrating that is becoming more important.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Siemens Corporate Technology is the R&D arm of Siemens. Siemens is a very large company with 400K+ employees and nearly $100 billion revenue. Siemens is a prominent player in Industrial automation, Infrastruture, energy and mobility.
What do you do?
I am a researcher in the software engineering with expertise in formal methods.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I have been in research organizations all along (starting with my first employment at Tata Research). So it is mostly accidental.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes. Generally IT services is what I had expected.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Since I am in R&D, it is difficult to single out a single memorable day. But the day when we won an award for innovation would possibly be one of them. In general "an-average-perfect-day" for me at work is when I solve a sticky problem troubling my colleagues.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Challenge is to quickly learn and build expertise in a new and emerging area. As researchers we are expected to know the state-of-the-art and provide consultancy to our product groups and solve their technical problems and help incubate new emerging technologies
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Siemens provides an excellent working environment with a great work life balance. Being in R&D also helps as we are in more control of the deadlines, meetings etc. unlike management and product teams who work in agile teams.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I would say, being involved in societies helped hone the networking skills.
What would you like to do next with your career?
If the opportunity is right, a start-up would be what I would like to do.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Being at York is definitely great as educational pedigree still matters to a certain extent. But increasingly, developing competency and demonstrating that is becoming more important. Since I am from computer science, that means contributing to open source projects of interests.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Developing competency related to computer science.
