A day in the life of a Specialist SpLD/Dyslexia Tutor in HE in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
The University of Sheffield
What do you do?
Tutor students with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties/neurodiversities
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
A fascination with language; the difficulties that people can encounter in its use, and how I can help students with overcoming language barriers to learning.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
It isn’t completely different- I also did a Cert. Ed. at UoY; I have just changed the age group and teaching focus that I began with when I started teaching in primary schools.
Describe your most memorable day at work
It’s always a memorable day when I know I have made a positive difference to a student’s day.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Adapting my teaching to each students’ individual needs is challenging but also the main focus of my work!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Academic, varied and rewarding. I love working at the heart of one of the U.K.’s top universities (and in one of its greenest cities- think trees and parks!) with all the diversity of culture, academic challenge, and discussions around current thinking on my subject which that brings.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I played mixed hockey for Langwith! I think living away from home at university, and mixing with a huge diversity of people, in itself teaches transferable skills for life; not to mention the academic critical thinking skills learned at uni which I feel are also an incredible life skill to acquire.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Retire! But not yet! I’ve been accepted to do a doctorate at the University of Sheffield!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Hang on to those critical thinking skills; think outside the box and stay open-minded to any new opportunity that come your way!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
My current job; advice for people with dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties- especially within a university setting, but also going forward into employment; how to manage dyslexia; my time at York Uni. Just ask- I am open to requests!
