A day in the life of a Cluster Services Portfolio Specialist in Brazil

Sometimes, you need to take a detour to get where you want to get to. Sometimes, when you get there, you learn that it is not really what you expected or wanted. And that's ok.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for a Swedish multinational company which supplies packaging, equipment and services for the food and beverage industry.

What do you do?

I am responsible for working closely with the sales team to leverage sales of the products I am responsible for. Based on their feedback, I can then revise the sales strategy and/or the price. My targets are net sales amount, net sales growth and margin.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

After I entered the corporate world, as a trainee, I quickly learned that I was attracted by market intelligence. Doing research, getting information and using that information to outline a strategy was something that really engaged me. And in my current job, that is what I am expected to do. My degree in international relations was a stepping stone to learn what questions to ask and which of them absolutely need to be answered.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes. When I graduated from York, I had the aspiration to work at an international organization.

Describe your most memorable day at work

So far, the most memorable day at work was sitting in on a very strategic meeting, that would mark the beginning of a key partnership between companies.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Yes. There is a lack of routine, and things can change pretty quickly. Sometimes, it means that the product you are working hard on will no longer be sold, which can be frustrating.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I did not undertake any extracurricular activities.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Sometimes, you need to take a detour to get where you want to get to. Sometimes, when you get there, you learn that it is not really what you expected or wanted. And that's ok. It can take a while to find a job, which can make you question your graduation choices. And that's ok as well.
