A day in the life of a Senior Associate in the United Kingdom
This role allows me to work at the cutting edge of technology, in a consultative and fast paced environment, using my interest in research and global business
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
True Search, Global Executive Search firm
What do you do?
Executive Search - I hire CEO/COO/GM/VPs for fast growth disruptive technology companies all over the world.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
As well as being ambitious and very much enjoying academia and developing research based arguments, I am a huge people person. This role allows me to work at the cutting edge of technology, in a consultative and fast paced environment, using my interest in research and global business. I also get to change the path of global companies, and of people's lives.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes- I thought I would be a Lawyer
Describe your most memorable day at work
Every day is fascinating - my most enjoyable days are when the reigns of the projects have been handed over to me and I get to deliver my own strategy, and run my own team (with top cover).
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Many - working with outside stakeholders, internal stakeholders, clients who are nervous that you might not deliver results for them, market changes, human capital, junior and more senior team members, tough deadlines. All of it is hugely worthwhile though for the end result.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Really fantastic - a team very much pulling together to succeed. We are a young business, so there is a lot of space for everyone to have input in how the company will continue to develop.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Netball and I was a YUSU Ents Officer - a great opportunity to start developing leadership and project management skills.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I'm working towards an internal promotion as well as identifying key areas of change in the technology market to build in to.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Don't worry if you don't have it all figured out. Think about what elements you would like to see in a profession - for me it was working with people, in a fast paced environment where I felt I would always be learning. Then start exploring jobs that fit this. It's important to do something you enjoy. Take a break if you need it - this is a marathon, not a sprint!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Happy to help in any way I can!
