A day in the life of a Freelance Marketing Consultant in Canada

The most challenging thing about being a freelance consultant is the initial work that is required to become established. It takes time and patience, and requires you to put yourself out there in order to develop a strong network of clients.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for myself and provide marketing services to a variety of clients.

What do you do?

I help clients promote their products and services, and work with them to build out strategic marketing plans.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I have spent my career working in a number of organisations and industries in order to acquire experience in most areas of marketing and become a marketing generalist.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes. During university I knew I wanted to be self-employed but I never really considered how I would find clients and secure projects. It does take a lot of work initially to build a solid network and steady stream of work.

Describe your most memorable day at work

My most memorable day was when I signed my first big contract to consult for the Vancouver Airport Authority.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

The most challenging thing about being a freelance consultant is the initial work that is required to become established. It takes time and patience, and requires you to put yourself out there in order to develop a strong network of clients.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

N/A

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Consider working for organisations of all sizes. During your search, focus on the caliber of experience you will get and the skills you will develop rather than just the names you can add to your CV. I think a lot of people put emphasis on finding a job with a large, well-recognised company when some of the most valuable experience they might acquire throughout their career could come from a small, agile, and quickly growing organisation that affords them much more autonomy to try new things and influence the overall direction of the company.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything.
