A day in the life of a Management Trainee (assistant brand manager) in China

Before I studied abroad, I have already decided to be a marketer. Therefore, a clear career aim is necessary. You could identify your interests through talking to your teachers, career consultants or through internships.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work in Unilever which is an FMCG company. We not only make many kinds of products and also make those brands famous, such as Dove, Lux, Omo, Comfort....

What do you do?

As a management trainee, you could try 3 different roles in your functions. For example, in marketing, you will experience brand development, brand building and sales/ec/.....(other functions). Currently, I’m working in Ec marketing team for Truliva, a water purifier brand. Mainly focus on improving customers awareness and interests of brand by online campaign, social content and precision marketing.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Before I studied abroad, I have already decided to be a marketer. Therefore, a clear career aim is necessary. You could identify your interests through talking to your teachers, career consultants or through internships.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No. After I graduated, all my applications were for marketing jobs. So I’m quite satisfied with my current work.

Describe your most memorable day at work

So many memorable days. However, the first day I joined Unilever is most exciting. All my dreams came true at that moment!

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I participated in several UK competitions at university and also found an internship in the York Council. These experience made me more confident and competitive than other candidates in interviews.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be brave and find out what you like as early as possible. Try any ways to learn that!
