A day in the life of a Product Analyst in the United Kingdom
I spent time working in a tech recruitment firm and having read a lot of business analyst CVs I decided to try a career switch into that sector.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
AND Digital are a digital solutions consultancy based across the UK, Netherlands and US
What do you do?
I often act as a liaison between business stakeholders and the IT or technical teams. An ongoing passion for technology and digital solutions, and curiousity into how businesses function is key.
Some duties include analysing an organisation's processes, systems, and models to ensure that digital solutions meet business needs effectively; gathering business requirements from stakeholders; documenting functional and technical requirements, typically through user stories; using visual representations like flowcharts, wireframes, and data models to explain and refine systems; working with project managers to help plan and monitor project progress, risks, and schedules.
Skills include: the ability to analyse a problem into its components and formulate solutions; clearly articulating ideas, requirements, and issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in both written and spoken formats; building and maintaining strong relationships to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders; understanding common technical concepts, software development processes, and system architectures; evaluating multiple options before helping to decide on the best course of action; leading and guiding meetings and workshops to drive towards conclusions and decision-making; prioritising tasks and managing time efficiently to cope with multiple projects or responsibilities; addressing and mediating differences between stakeholders with competing needs; grasping the workings of the business or industry, the key players, and the business environment.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I spent lockdown learning how to code full-stack and enjoyed the collaboration that goes into digital solutions. I had also been project lead on a variety of projects across my other roles and thrived on problem-solving and using my communication skills. This combination led me to research roles in tech which combined my strengths and aligned with my beliefs.
I spent time working in a tech recruitment firm and having read a lot of business analyst CVs I decided to try a career switch into that sector. I knew this was likely to involve a pay cut but I was happy to make the compromise.
I joined the FDM BA/Project Management graduate scheme and completed my training with the second-highest scores in my cohort. I immediately went into placement at Deutsche Bank in the CTO department where I worked closely with key business stakeholders including C-suite, Product Owners, and developers to manage projects. I utilised all opportunities to build on my knowledge of the product development lifecycle, agile methodologies, and cloud solutions in preparation for moving to a tech consultancy.
I chose to apply to consultancies due to the variety of work that would be available to me and the wealth of knowledge from colleagues. I went through a 2 stage interview process: a technical presentation based on a brief and a culture interview. Since joining the company I have worked with 4 clients across retail, media, and charity sectors.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes. When I graduated I was unsure what sector I wanted to join. Through various roles, I found my place in tech.
Describe your most memorable day at work
I led a project to build an internal website for my office. This has become the hub of all information and documentation and was the result of weeks of research and development work. The launch day was fantastic as it was my first project for the company.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
This is often the balance of time, money and scope of a piece of work. Stakeholder management is always key.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work fully remote with the option to go to the office. Client office expectations vary. I receive 12 volunteer and upskill days a year in addition to holiday. All my clients have been local, which follows the company's model.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I worked at an after school club which really fostered my passion for education and cemented to me how important the early years are.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I am working towards becoming a Product Manager/Owner. I would love to work for a company with a strong sustainability agenda.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Network, tailor your CV and do your research. Job interviews are a two way street and remember your worth. Apply for things even if you feel you don't hit all the person spec, you never know what opportunities might come your way.
