A day in the life of a Research Physicist in the United Kingdom
Developing a new product is hard work... but when it does work there is a great sense of achievement.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Precision Acoustics Ltd are a leading global manufacturer of hydrophones, ultrasound transducers, ultrasound test stations and acoustic materials.
What do you do?
I work as part of the hardware research and development team. I focus on developing and characterising acoustic materials.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I always enjoyed research and knew that I wanted to continue a career in Physics.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes, I didn't think it would have anything to do with Ultrasound considering my masters by research was in Nuclear Physics!
Describe your most memorable day at work
Presenting my first publication at a conference in Germany. Travelling is a key part of my role and I love every minute of it.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Developing a new product is hard work, you will fail over and over again but when it does work there is a great sense of achievement and in the end, it was all worth it. If we knew what we were doing it wouldn't be research...
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work in an office however I also spend a lot of time in the lab and workshop. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and you aren't required to wear formal clothing, only PPE is required in the workshop and lab. The office is based in rural Dorset near Puddletown forest so it's nice to head into the forest at lunch for a breath of fresh air.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I always had a part-time job whilst at university, whether it be assisting in the lab or working at Starbucks. Both look good on the CV and its a great way to gain extra skills.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I am working towards a PhD at present that is funded by my employer. I think I would like to continue with research whether it be in industry or academia.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Get a LinkedIn profile and spend a decent amount of time on it making it look good. Put plenty of detail on. LinkedIn is a great place to look for jobs and connect with potential employers. I got my job this way!
