Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work in a secondary school in London, that is OFSTED Outstanding and a National Training School.
What do you do?
I teach History and Politics to students aged 11-19. I am second in charge of History and for the past three years have mentored School Centred Initial Teacher Trainees.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
It combined my subject that I love, with a craft that I am passionate about and know makes a difference. The more you teach, the more you realise how amusing kids can be, too!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Every day - no two days are the same and this is what makes teaching a rewarding profession.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
It is a profession and so requires patience and determination to develop your craft; it is a very social job and working with young people can be unpredictable.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work with a range of people from different backgrounds in a supportive and professional environment.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I completed the York Award, which meant I took part in a range of extra curricular activities, including Judo which taught the value of hard work and discipline, and the York Students In Schools programme, which helped me confirm my future career decision. I also worked for the university's Development and Alumni Relations Office raising funds from alumnifor low income students. This helped me to see the importance of giving back to help other students.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I am about to complete a Master's in History to develop my subject specialism. I will then apply for Head of History positions.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Teach - it's a great job, a worthy profession, secure career and great holidays!
