A day in the life of a Business Owner in the United Kingdom
Still wondering when I am going to have to get a "proper job"!
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I run a company called UK Freelancers Ltd which employs a small number of staff (<10) in the broadcast television space as we as booking freelancers for some other companies
What do you do?
Mainly we provide playout / transmission services for 2 sport channels (not available in the UK)
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Got involved with YSTV while at York and decided this is what I wanted to do. Still wondering when I am going to have to get a "proper job"!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
It has changed dramatically thanks to the advances in technology
Describe your most memorable day at work
Broadcasting the last day of the 2011/12 Premier League Season when Manchester City scored the 2 late goals to win the title. Later that year I also worked on the Olympics on "Super Saturday" when team GB won the 3 athletic gold medals. Still can't believe I was being paid to do this!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
If you mess up, millions of people around the World will see it!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Lots of banter, sometimes very "near the knuckle" but generally casual with an attitude of "if your good enough you are old enough".
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
As mentioned previously - most of my spare time was spent at YSTV
What would you like to do next with your career?
Aware that I am heading towards retirement but maybe a couple more Olympics / World Cups.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Never be afraid to ask - the worst that will happen is they say no.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Working in the broadcast media
