A day in the life of a Pricing & Promotions Assistant Manager in the United Kingdom
Studying German lead to my first job at Lidl head office. After 3 years of varied experience at Lidl, I then moved to Marks and Spencer for a more senior role.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
M&S Foods, part of Marks and Spencer. My role is located in the head office in London.
What do you do?
Provide insight and analysis to ensure the most effective pricing and promotion of M&S food products.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Studying German lead to my first job at Lidl head office. After 3 years of varied experience at Lidl, I then moved to Marks and Spencer for a more senior role.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No, but only as I didn't have much of an idea of what it would be when I graduated! I wasn't keen on the 'typical' language careers (teacher, translator), but was keen to still use my languages in my career.
Describe your most memorable day at work
After approx 4 months of uncertainty about whether the role was right for me, the day that I realised I had made the right move to Marka & Spencer was pretty memorable.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Role in the college JCRC - built my confidence and ability to communicate with people of all ages/levels.
Part time work in retail/waitressing - built a work ethic which is incerdibly important to have in entry level roles.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be open minded, flexible, and try and look past the 'right now'. The 6 months of office temp work I completed straight after graduating was invaluble experience when applying for entry level roles, but at the time of doing them, I felt like what i was doing wasn't exciting or impressive enough! With the right midset, you will upskill yourself in any job!
