A day in the life of a Founder/Managing Director in the United Kingdom

I founded the business and I am currently its managing director. I also manage several clients, and handle the label's day-to-day operations.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Kaleidoscope is an artist management company and record label founded in 2015 and based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

What do you do?

I founded the business and I am currently its managing director. I also manage several clients, and handle the label's day-to-day operations.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

My education allowed me to develop a valuable skillset that helps me run my business.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes, completely!

Describe your most memorable day at work

It's difficult to choose... if pushed, it would probably be spending a week at Capitol Studios in LA.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Absolutely - working in any creative industry is challenging, whether that's the financial difficulties of being in a high risk, high reward business, or dealing with an ever-changing technological landscape.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Up until recently, I worked out of an office with its own recording and writing spaces. However, I have relocated to Thailand so currently back to working from home. Wherever you work in the music industry, it's invariably a relaxed and informal setting.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I didn't do anywhere near enough things whilst at York - I should have joined more societies and tried to make more of what was on offer. I did play in bands while I was at uni though, which is clearly relevant experience to where I've ended up.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I would like to replicate what I do in the UK in Thailand - working with emerging artists to help them make their first in-roads into the music industry.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Develop a broad and deep skillset - the jobs that will exist in 10 years time are probably unimaginable to us currently.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Any questions about the music industry.
