A day in the life of a Senior Marketing Professional in the United Kingdom
Consider the company culture and sector you enter carefully. Finding a place you can grow from the outset is hugely beneficial personally and loyalty is great on the CV
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Just finished a contract at Epson and now about to undertake an MBA.
What do you do?
I'm an expert in developing marketing strategy and end-to-end campaigns for global businesses - most typically IT infrastructure FTSE 100 companies. This includes everything from hosting events, to press launches, internal communications and social media.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
First and foremost, I found a company whose culture appealed to me. I applied for a graduate sales scheme, but actually ended up having a Project Coordinator role created for me. From there I networked my way into a marketing role and have specialised in general marketing ever since!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I expected to enter the FMCG sector, rather than IT. Starting my career at an IT Services business somewhat inadvertently led me to specialise in marketing for technology.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Customer events I've hosted in Gibraltar and Spain stick out the most! Marketing often isn't glamorous, but occasionally there are some fun perks!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Part of the Musical Theatre/Opera/Panto societies, which definitely builds a foundation in presentation and communication skills.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Looking for a permanent role in a growing SME business, and one day build my own marketing consultancy.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Consider the company culture and sector you enter carefully. Finding a place you can grow from the outset is hugely beneficial personally and loyalty is great on the CV... However, some sectors are insular and prefer to recruit only those with previous sector experience. If you stay progress too far in an "unintended" sector, you may find it difficult to move to another speciality later in your career without taking a pay cut/step down!
