A day in the life of a Partner Account Manager for Southern Europe in France
I lived in 5 countries, I work in 6 languages and I am happy to share my diverse experience and success stories to help you in your career.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Google is a multinational technology company that specializes in internet-related services.
What do you do?
I work with Google tech partners by helping them integrate Google Ads-related solutions into their platform and scale their business. I work for Southern Europe market and I am based in France. Prior to my current role I was a technical specialist in online and offline e-commerce solutions in Google European HQ in Dublin.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Job Search: I have been using multiple career search techniques such as: career websites, university career fairs, attending conferences (eg IT and Innovation) to do networking, LinkedIn, using past work experience networks.
Work Immigration Documents: being a Russian passport holder finding a job in the EU was tough. Therefore, I focused applying only for positions in large companies and checked whether they provide visa support before applying.
Extra curriculum education: I was undertaking additional short-term courses to enhance and diversify my profile. I also invested time into learning more languages (I currently speak 6 languages in working proficiency) as this makes you stand out.
Scientific Research: during my university years I published papers to Scientific Journals and presented at international high ranked conferences on IT competing with PhD students and industry professionals
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes, I was originally intending to work in a creative advertising agency and also considering hospitality/entertainment industry. However, my current job is still related to advertising and involves a great deal of creativity.
Describe your most memorable day at work
I guess it was my first promotion. I wasn't expecting it and I received great feedback from my manager and my colleagues. Although I was focused on growing my knowledge and contributing to the business, it is great to be recognized!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
The biggest challenge is fast changing environment. We live in a time where we need to be flexible so very often I had to quickly adapt to changing team structure or objectives.
Also working in a large company means high competition level, so you may feel that you need to constantly upskill.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
If I had to describe it in 3 words: innovative, collaborative and creative. People are always willing to help each other and share knowledge.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was a the course representative and also helped the freshers with onboarding. I also was co-organizing entertainment events, such as Chinese New Year Gala. Participating in such events develops creative and leadership skills which can be applied in work environment.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I would like to pursue an MBA in future. At my workplace I would like to grow to the next level of performance and do more project management.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
1. Diversify your profile, learn languages, take additional courses, think how can you stand out
2. When applying for jobs find the right balance between applying for multiple roles but really working on the quality of each application
3. Network: whenever you are attending events, travelling, volunteering always try to make connections. You never know if this airplane seat neighbor from your summer vacation flight might be useful in future.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Job applications, Career Development, Job applications for students in need of visa support, doing scientific research while studying, extra curriculum education, being a mature student, changing your major/applying for roles different from your degree
