A day in the life of a Software Engineer in the United Kingdom
[At University] I jumped headfirst into all things software development. I did freecodecamp, edX and a tonne more. Everything was free resources and I couldn’t recommend using them more.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for Sky Bet, sponsors of the EFL, and part of the largest online gambling company in the world.
What do you do?
I work on the Sky Bet app, meaning I build features and contribute to the software architecture. I’m a mobile developer, which means I write Swift and a little bit of Objective C. When I first started, I was mostly writing Objective C
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I completed a number of internships, built a portfolio and freelanced, and landed a grad scheme at Sky through careers.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Absolutely! I thought I would continue to pursue further education.
Describe your most memorable day at work
My first major release and having contributed to that. It was a huge feature I’d worked on, and everyone was really impressed with how it turned out.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
