A day in the life of a Industry Research Analyst in the United Kingdom
Writing my dissertation about the financial crisis led me to want to work in finance and get a better understanding of it.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Fisher Investments is one of the largest privately owned wealth management firms in the world. The firm specialises in wealth management for high net worth clients.
What do you do?
- Analyse portfolios of prospective and existing clients
- Analyse financial products
- Industry analysis - I.e. analyse trends, fund flows etc.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Doing my masters at York. Writing my dissertation about the financial crisis led me to want to work in finance and get a better understanding of it.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes. I realise now that your degree doesn’t determine what you end up doing.
Describe your most memorable day at work
It has to be my first day. I was very nervous but it was a great experience.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Not many extra curricular activities. I learned most of my stuff by meeting great people and asking for their advice. It’s simple, but it works.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Don’t pursue a job, pursue a career which you think could be fulfilling. While applying for jobs is a difficult process, it’s so important you end up choosing something which you’re passionate about. If you’re passionate about it, you’ll be good at it, and then money comes easier. I see too many people taking a job and not really thinking about their passion.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything about working in the financial sector. I might not always have the answer, but I will try to help or point you into the right direction. Also happy to help preparing for an interview.
