A day in the life of a Business Development Manager in the United Kingdom
I ensure our products are available for Healthcare Professionals to use within hospitals, for community services and specialist departments. No two days are the same!
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
3M is a global company specialising in many different industries. I am involved in the Medical Solutions Division, providing specialist medical equipment and training to hospitals.
What do you do?
I ensure our products are available for Healthcare Professionals to use within hospitals, for community services and specialist departments. No two days are the same! I could be meeting with consultants, specialist nurses or procurement.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
The health and science side of my Biology degree gave me the necessary information and knowledge to have in-depth conversations with HCPs around the clinical aspects and benefits of the products I’m selling.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No.
Describe your most memorable day at work
We brought a new product to a Lymphoedema clinic and within 2 weeks a patient they had been trying to heal for 2 years, rang me to say he could walk better, wear his favourite shoes and see his grandchildren again.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
There are incredibly busy people I work with in the NHS so sometimes decisions can take months or years to be made!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
The Scientific Skills modules - especially the Bioenterprise section helped build my confidence for public speaking.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Explore every opportunity that presents itself to you, it might not be what you thought you wanted to go in to, but you never know!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything.
