A day in the life of a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom
I expected to work in consulting/finance. Found them interesting and challenging but the culture was a mismatch. Fintech was close enough for me to leverage my previous experiences and the culture was a big improvement

What do you do?
Help work out which products are going to be the next big thing for us
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Took the intership/grad job application cycle too seriously (lots of interviews/assessment centres). Did a few internships/industrial placement in big corporates and realised it just wasn't for me. Took a grad job while I figured things out. Unsurprisingly, ended up in a early stage company which has a culture much better suited to me.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I expected to work in consulting/finance. Found them interesting and challenging but the culture was a mismatch. Fintech was close enough for me to leverage my previous experiences and the culture was a big improvement
Describe your most memorable day at work
I'm a big fan of internal training days. Very different from the usual day to day and lots of face to face interaction.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Delivering client work is always hard, it comes with a certain pressure you don't get on internal projects.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Relaxed work culture - comes with tech usually. Relaxed dress sense. Flexitime. I don't live in London which means a much improved work life balance (minimal commute times and fairer expectations on working hours). I work from the office mostly but there is flexibility to work from home
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Committee member for York Community Consulting - student led consultancy. I was interested in skills based volunteering and helping students become more employable
What would you like to do next with your career?
Take on bigger client projects and potentially work abroad
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
The earlier you start applying for positions the better. Try as many jobs/industries as you can and get a feel of what interests you
