Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Morgan Stanley is one of the biggest investment banks in the world and is the number one ranked Equities Franchise. Investment banks, broadly speaking, match the demand of capital from corporates with a need for return with investors.

What do you do?

I work as an Equity Research Analyst. The role of an analyst is it come up with Investment ideas that help institutional clients (hedge funds and asset managers) generate a return whilst facilitating trade flows for the bank.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Having read a number of books I became increasingly interested with finance. Which lead me to study Economics at York before joining the world of finance.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Presenting my first stock initiation. Three months of work culminated with a presentation to the senior members of my firm which received good feedback.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Many.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Better than most perceive it to be.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I played a number of team sports. Effective team work and communication is very important.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
