A day in the life of a Philanthropy Officer in the United Kingdom
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
What do you do?
I am responsible for fundraising from trusts, foundations and some alumni
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
The last 4 years I have been researching on a funded PhD- which led me into working in the university sector generally.
Straight after graduation I worked in New Zealand in a sales role for two years. I have also worked in The City, and continue to run a small side business as a tour guide.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
A little bit- I wasnt sure at all what I wanted to do after graduating though so its been a good discovery!
Describe your most memorable day at work
Securing the first donation off of one of our alumni on the phone.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was Rugby Captain- which taught me a lot about leadership of a team, organising training, managing egos and occasional crisis management!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be flexible in what you want to do, realise it might take a while to find the right thing and be willing to learn something off every job.
