A day in the life of a Learning and Development Manager in the United Kingdom
I have always been a people person so I'm not surprised I ended up in L&D although my pathway here was a bit odd
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for a professional services firm which provides a number of different services such as tax, audit, technology and consulting to other businesses.
What do you do?
I am a Learning and Development manager for our Risk Assurance practice (Cyber /Technology and Business Risk).
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I have always been a people person so I'm not surprised I ended up in L&D although my pathway here was a bit odd! I intentionally joined a Graduate scheme focusing on Technology Risk, I really enjoyed it - especially the amount of time I got to spend with so many amazing clients and different projects. After 3 years I got the opportunity to be seconded into our L&D team to help build out our training pathways for the Technology Business, I loved it so much I stayed in the department and my role has now widened to cover the whole of our Risk Assurance business.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes! I was firmly attached to working in Cyber Security! On joining PwC I found there were a lot of other areas of Technology Risk that I enjoyed working in too.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Running our induction week for 150 new graduates at a hotel in Surrey - very stressful, busy but an amazing opportunity to help start so many new joiners on their career paths.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
I am dyslexic and dyspraxic so I intentionally found the writing side of my role quite difficult - I have been given lots of support from PwC with this over the years which has made a real difference to my confidence (and the quality of my writing!)
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Very flexible and varied, no two days are the same! - I work from home most of the time with the odd trip to London sprinkled in for good measure. I love being able to manage my own time in the day and get out for a trip to the gym or a run at lunchtime. I also feel very lucky that my team is very technology focused as although we all work remotely we still keep in touch where needed via video chat.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
At university I was a Head STYC for freshers and also a welfare officer as part of Vanbrugh JCRC. Both of these roles have put me in a really good position when either dealing with clients or supporting members of staff.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I am working towards completing my CIPD Diploma in Learning and Development and would like to work towards promotion to Senior Manager over the next few years. It's difficult to say where I will be in two years time as I have learnt new opportunities are always round the corner and its good to keep challenging yourself!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Do your research! - Always been clear on why you want the job and what the company actually do. Be open minded - it's not always possible to get your dream job straight away but you might find a role that will put you on the right path to get there.
