A day in the life of a Degree Apprenticeship Coordinator in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Leeds Beckett University
What do you do?
Coordinate all operational aspects of Degree Apprenticeships in Leeds Business School. Direct, advise, and support apprentices, academics, and employers to enable successful completion.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Using the skills I've built up in HE to reach out to the business community and enable them to make the most of the apprenticeship levy and the apprenticeship opportunities we offer - especially for those who haven't had any previous HE experience
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes
Describe your most memorable day at work
Watching our first successful cohort of Level 6 apprentices graduate and pass their end point assessments!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Lots! Constantly managing the changing demands of HE, the funding bodies, and employers while providing an excellent and supportive learning experience for apprentices.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work mainly from the office but visit employers and apprentices every 6 months or so. I work in a great team and they're really supportive of development opportunities. The landscape of HE apprenticeships is constantly changing so the people I work with all have a very 'we're all in this together' collegiate attitude and we're always trailblazing and looking for the best solutions to problems. It can be frustrating but it's exciting and never dull!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was in the Dance Society, Ballet Soc, and was an active part of my college. I learnt excellent communication and teamwork skills through my extracurriculars, and they help you meet such a wide range of people!
What would you like to do next with your career?
I'm focusing on developing my delivery skills, particularly in relation to reflective practice (a key part of apprenticeships is the reflective portfolio), and hope to specialise in end point assessment preparation going forward.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Make the most of every opportunity at university! And don't sweat too much if what you plan doesn't come off. There's always another opportunity around the corner.
